Win98SE Driver Determination
Determine whether the new FPXDriver is on a 4pi CD-ROM or the 4pi website. If it is on the CD-ROM, insert the CD-ROM in its drive. If it is on the 4pi website, download the new FPXDriver from the 4pi web site. If you are working with a CD-ROM, locate its FPXDriver folder for future reference. If you are working with a download, expand the self-extracting archive and place the FPXDriver folder where you can locate it for the updater.
Before updating the driver, you must determine whether you have a vxd or a wmd driver already installed. To determine which driver you have, search your hard drive for FPXDrvr.vxd. If you do not find the file, and assuming that no one maliciously removed the file previously, proceed immeditely to the Win2k Update Driver procedure and continue. If you find the FPXDrvr.vxd file, follow the instructions below.
Win98SE Driver Update Procedure
Before updating the driver, you must remove the appropriate .inf and .vxd files. If you do not remove these files, you will not necessarily see the windows that are described in the procedure. 4pi Analysis does not support any other procedure. If the following procedure does not work for you, you may return your computer to 4pi and we will perform the update for a fee.
You must know the location of the systemroot folder. This is on the boot drive and likely is called "C:\Windows," but may be called something else depending on your installation.
Find the systemroot\System\FPXDrvr.vxd file and delete it.
Open the systemroot \inf\Other folder and locate the 4pi .inf file. It should have the name "4pi" in it and likely will end with "FPXDRVR.INF." When this .inf file pertaining to 4pi is found, delete it.
At this point, there are two methods that can be followed. The first is to reboot. The computer will find new hardware, and you can proceed with the Win2k Install procedure. The second is to not reboot, and follow the Win2k Update Driver procedure. In neither case will the dialog windows you see in Windows 98SE exactly match those of the Win2k screenshots in this document; however, we recommend the reboot, because the dialog windows that do appear in Win98SE will then most closely match those for Win2k.
